The ambient rattle of the rock tumbler
Friday is catchupday at school.
Cats in the sun, pushed into a different spot
because of the humming tumble.
Too cold to go out to play
Nowhere to go exactly, nothing to do
except Mom, look! over and over,
except purchasing a 5/64 drill bit
so we can pierce an American Girl Doll’s ears.
No one in this house will rest until that happens.

One small personal cup of coffee,
while the gems turn from rough to smoother
in grit and water and time.
Double mask, double blind.
Tiny motor, tumbling.
